Close to you – In Deiner Nähe
These are sounds that touch. Markus Stockhausen generates them in his monthly concert series in Cologne’s Südstadt with his trumpets, the silence and the wonderful accoustics of the interior of the church of St. Maternus.
We have put together a CD for you with recordings of solo and duo concerts from the year 2000 with mostly intuitive music. “The king is dead– long live the king!” could be said on the subject of music and mysticism when you hear Markus Stockhausen here as part of a duo with international musicians. For it takes truly exceptional musicians to infuse a combination with life that so often degenerates to elevator music. The delicate as well as gestural-melodious richness of the CD is fed from very different ethnic sources, but the energy of the disparate details alert in every single phrase flows ever consistently in one rational direction that lets you recognize an organism beyond the human – origin-oriented stylistics. Quiet and concentration does not dissolve into something softly meditative but turns into a poly-colored, exciting fresco of inner calling. The fifth title is an entrancing example for just that. The easy sound of the piccolo trumpet in the interplay with Enrique Diaz is deeply mesmerizing (KLASSIK-HEUTE.de 03/2002). “A few years ago I spent some time chatting with Markus Stockhausen, a completely relaxed and calm guy. Just having met him makes me understand the very meditative music of “Close to You” differently than it could otherwise be perceived. We don’t listen to a timid escape into Christian glorification but witness a show of strong emotions. But what’s it about? “Close to You” is a compilation of 10 live tracks of a 2000 concert series at a church in Cologne, St. Maternus, a miracle in the realm of accoustics. “We have put together the CD with recordings of solo and duo concerts with mostly intuitive music”, says Markus Stockhausen. Other than Stockhausen’s other-worldly sounding trumpet, piccolo trumpet and flugelhorn we hear Fabrizio Ottaviucci (grand piano), Dhafer Youssef (oud, vocals), Enrique Diaz (bass, vocals, flute), Noirin Ni Riain (vocals) and Manos Tsangaris (percussions). All works very closely burst with tension, even though they may carry dangerously naive titles like “Ich sehne mich nach Dir” (I yearn for you), “Ruf der Erde” (the call of the Earth), “Bei Dir” (with you), or “Immer wieder” (again and again) – whatever it is that we hear captivates us, sounds like a medieval enigma due to its musical textures, and with its meditative quality allows us access to a world we enter very rarely: Ourselves (Volker Wilde in “Der Schallplattenmann”)
