Abenglühen – Evening glow
Markus Stockhausen & brass choirs of the Protestant Church
ABENDGLÜHEN is a work commissioned by the German Protestant Church to celebrate the 31st German Protestant Church Congress 2007 which took place in Cologne. The piece was premiered on the evening of the 6th of June after the evening blessing with about 1,500 brass players. These brass players were split into six groups, which positioned themselves on both sides of the river Rhine between the Hohenzollern Bridge and the Deutzer Bridge. Six conductors each led about 250 brass players from the different national committees.
The six conductors were put in sync by Tara Bouman through radio communication. She indicated the tempo and also conducted Markus Stockhausen. Both stood high up on a balcony of the Lufthansa high-rise building. From there Markus Stockhausen played his mostly improvised solo trumpet part, which was amplified over seventeen loudspeaker systems on both sides of the Rhine and on the Deutzer Bridge.
The recording of ABENDGLÜHEN took place on the 10th of November 2007 in the auditorium of the Waldorf school in Erftstadt, close to Cologne. Around 70 brass players of the Protestant Church collaborated on the recording under the direction of Markus Stockhausen. His solo trumpet part was added at a later stage in the recording studio.
This CD may give an impression of what the over 150,000 people experienced on that lukewarm early summer night of the 6th of June 2007. On two tracks of the recording we simulated how different groups – as indicated in the score – increasingly play independently of each another (tracks 8 and 9 on the CD). This recording wants to keep the music and also the memory of that moving performance of ABENDGLÜHEN alive, especially for those who collaborated and performed and for the large audience in Cologne.
