So you may have seen Markus Stockhausen improvising with Florian Weber and our students at the RNCM in May 2016. And you may have also seen our Big Band and Chamber Orchestra collaborate on Tim Garland’s Luca’s Winter project last Christmas. But for our second Big Band show of the season, we’re putting all of these musical forces together on one big stage and will stand back to see what happens.
Markus Stockhausen has built a stellar reputation as a free improviser, moving comfortably between the jazz and classical worlds. He will arrive a few days before this show to work extensively with our students, to encourage and draw out their improvisational skills. The first half begins with Markus’ trumpet and our strings players as the primary focus in Miniature of a Soul’s Journey, and then moves into a section of intuitive music with strings, wind, brass and percussion. After the interval, the trumpet and strings will be joined by our Big Band then additional wind players swell the numbers for Dancing Light, an homage to Paul Klee commissioned by the Swiss Jazz Orchestra. Markus commented that this light-filled piece evokes the eternal journey of the soul, complete with flying sparks that mirror the creativity on stage.
We expect big things from this event. It’s an incredible opportunity for our students – and the audience too! So make sure that you’re part of the story.
